First Post - welcome!

Welcome to my World of BL!

I'm really looking forward to sharing my opinions and thoughts with all readers about the fascinating, strange fantasy world that is Boys Love (BL) movies and TV series. I would love to hear all your comments and opinions too, so please leave comments whenever you like.

I'm 100% brand new to BL. I've only recently started watching videos (in about the last month). I came across examples of it by accident on youtube and have been watching shows daily ever since.

I don't recall exactly what the first BL drama was that I found, but I do remember which video caught my attention first and most strongly. Oddly enough, it's not strictly speaking a BL video, but a short clip of the Japanese series "Hirunaka no Ryuusei" that's been edited to make it look like it's BL. It was posted by a Youtube publisher Ice Smile, and it's titled Satsuki x Daiki. There's no dialogue or subtitles in the video, just a single simple song "Drive" by Wonder, which is beautifully paired with the video. I certainly haven't found any other video since then whose soundtrack is so perfectly matched and has such an instant impact. I was instantly hooked on the story of two guys who circle each other very warily, disdainfully, sometimes hinting at violence to come. And then, of course, there is Alan Shirahama. I didn't know who he was before I had watched this video, I was gobsmacked. I realised he is one of the most unusual and strikingly beautiful Japanese men I'd ever seen.

This short video has since become my most-watched video on youtube, by far. I love the way Ice Smile has edited the video (all his/her videos are very well edited), and I appreciate it even more now knowing that the characters in the actual TV show have nothing to do with BL. I will also remember it as the video that pointed me in the direction of the long shiny road that leads through the world of Asian BL dramas.

It's a strange alien world so far. Sometimes I feel very lost in it. I'm a Caucasian of a certain age living in an English speaking country that is predominantly Caucasian, so watching BL for the first time has been very confusing. Why do they guys act the way they do? Is it specific to BL, or is it cultural? Why are the girls in the story treated the way they are? Why do the story writers make the choices they do? Some of their choices are very strange indeed. Some of them are downright infuriating. For someone who is more used to seeing depictions of gay love and relationships in Western cinema, I find BL dramas both mystifying and refreshingly new. I'm certainly never bored watching them (well, not yet anyway)! So hopefully by writing about them - and also hearing your opinions! - I will be able to put them into a clearer perspective, so that I can then understand and appreciate them better.
